A Family Yearbook Video Can Keep the Year From Turning Into a Blur

The camera roll always tells on me. There are twelve versions of one child eating a popsicle, one blurry shoe, a suspicious number of screenshots I meant to delete, and then, tucked between them, the tiny moment I forgot I had saved. That is why a family yearbook video makes sense to me. It gives the ordinary months somewhere to land.

The year is not one big event

Parenthood can make time feel oddly lumpy. A birthday takes up the whole week. A school form eats an entire afternoon. Then June and July vanish behind snack wrappers, wet swimsuits, and “Where are your shoes?” said in four different tones.

When I look back, though, the year rarely feels like the calendar promised. It is not all holidays and posed smiles. It is the missing front tooth, the living-room dance that lasted 38 seconds, the way a little kid says a word wrong and then, heartbreakingly, stops saying it wrong.

The magic is in the almost-too-small parts

I have learned, through making family videos, that parents often underestimate the in-between footage. We think the big clip is the cake or the costume or the first day outfit. Sometimes it is. But often the scene that makes everyone quiet is a child leaning against a grandparent’s knee, or two siblings laughing at nothing with their socks half off.

A yearbook, at least the kind I love, does not need to prove the year was perfect. It just needs to notice that it happened.

There is relief in making a container

Because otherwise the photos sit there, demanding to be sorted, printed, backed up, labeled, remembered. Very relaxed behavior from a rectangle in my pocket.

Putting them into one small video can feel less like a project and more like returning things to their proper shelf. Not every moment gets chosen. That is part of the kindness. A family can say, “This was the shape of our year,” without pretending every afternoon was frame-worthy.

And maybe that is the quiet comfort: not that we kept everything, but that we kept enough for the year to recognize itself when it comes back to visit.
