Picky Eating Without Turning Dinner Into a Courtroom

Picky eating can make a reasonable adult lose perspective very quickly.

One minute you are a calm person who understands child development. The next minute you are staring at a single green bean and wondering if this is where your authority as a parent officially ends.

I have tried to be relaxed about food. I really have. I know children need time. I know pressure can make things worse. I know nobody becomes a balanced adult because their mother delivered a dramatic speech about broccoli on a Tuesday.

Still, dinner has a special talent for turning ordinary parents into amateur negotiators.

“Just smell it.”

“Just lick it.”

“Just let it exist near you without acting like it has personally betrayed the family.”

The funny thing is that small children can be adventurous in every other area of life. They will touch a mystery object at the park. They will put a sticker on a dog. They will drink bathwater if you look away for half a second. But a piece of roasted carrot? Suspicious. Possibly illegal.

I think part of the stress comes from how public feeding feels, even at home. Parents carry so many invisible worries into one plate. Is this healthy enough? Are they eating enough? Did I create this? Will they eat only beige food until college?

Then the child says, “It has a dot,” and the whole emotional structure collapses.

I am trying to see dinner less like a test and more like repeated exposure to being a person in a family. Some nights children eat the food. Some nights they learn that other people eat food near them and survive. Some nights the victory is nobody making the potato a moral issue.

That may not sound inspiring, but it is oddly freeing.

Because the table is not a courtroom.

It is just dinner. Even when the green bean is apparently very suspicious.
