Grandparent Advice Is Often Love Wearing the Wrong Shoes

Grandparent advice has a very specific texture.

It can be loving, useful, completely outdated, strangely confident, and delivered while someone is pouring coffee as if no emotional weather has entered the room at all.

I try to remember that most advice from grandparents is love wearing the wrong shoes. It means well. It wants to help. It may also be walking directly across the clean floor after you just asked it to wait outside.

“You slept through the night at six weeks.”

“We never worried about snacks like this.”

“A little crying never hurt anyone.”

These sentences can land in a parent’s body like tiny darts, even when nobody meant them that way. Because parents are already carrying so much. We are making decisions in a world that has changed, with information our parents did not have, under judgment they could not have imagined. The internet has many gifts, but peace is not one of them.

At the same time, I do not want to turn every generational difference into a battle. Grandparents often see things we miss. They notice the child, not the app. They remember that a sandwich can just be a sandwich. They are sometimes gloriously unimpressed by the parenting trend currently making everyone tired.

So I am learning to separate the love from the instruction.

Sometimes I can take the warmth and leave the method. Sometimes I can say, “We are doing it this way,” and still pass the cookies. Sometimes the boundary can be clear without becoming a family documentary with dramatic music.

Children are lucky when they are loved by more than one generation.

Parents are allowed to be the parents.

Both can be true at the same table, even if someone has very strong opinions about socks.
