Bedtime Battles Are Not Always About Sleep

Bedtime battles often begin with a very small person announcing, with courtroom confidence, that they are suddenly starving. Not snacky. Starving. This is usually after dinner, bath, pajamas, two books, and a stuffed animal lineup that required more diplomacy than some international meetings.

I know the easy joke is that children are tiny delay experts, and honestly, the evidence is strong. There is always a missing sock, a scary shadow, a question about volcanoes, or a desperate need to tell you something that happened near a slide six hours ago.

The Stalling Has Layers

By the end of the day, I think parents can become very focused on the finish line. Teeth. Lights. Door. Silence. We can almost hear the kettle, the couch, the single adult thought waiting patiently in the next room.

Then a child says, “One more hug,” and somehow it feels like both a manipulation tactic and the purest sentence ever spoken.

That is the tricky part. The request may be inconvenient and still be real. They may be tired and also wired. They may be testing a boundary and also checking that the day did not end before they were done being loved out loud.

I do not think every bedtime needs to become a tender movie scene. Some nights, the kindest thing is a firm tuck-in and a parent who refuses to negotiate with a child holding a toothbrush like a microphone.

But I have a soft spot for the emotional mess of bedtime. It is where the day loosens its grip. Little kids remember what scared them, what made them proud, who would not share, who did, and why the ceiling suddenly looks suspicious.

The turn, for me, is realizing that bedtime battles are not always an argument against sleep. Sometimes they are a clumsy love letter written in requests for water.

And some evenings, the victory is not a perfect routine. It is leaving the room after one last hug, knowing they felt the door close gently.
