They wave with one hand and hold a cracker in the other. They announce facts no one requested. They forget the person’s name and then beam like they have delivered a royal address.

For grandparents especially, voices carry a tenderness photos cannot quite manage. A child saying “I love you” in their own uneven rhythm is not just a message. It is a timestamp. This is who we were for one bright minute. This is how love sounded before the next growth spurt.

I do not think every family memory has to become a production. Some are better when they stay small enough to hear clearly.
