The First Day of Preschool Is Also a First Day for Parents

The first day of preschool gets described as a child’s milestone, but parents know the truth.

It is our first day too.

Yes, the child has the backpack. The small shoes. The carefully chosen outfit that may or may not survive snack. But the parent is also doing something new. We are practicing the art of smiling with a throat full of feelings.

There is such a specific tenderness in that morning.

You take the photo. You adjust the strap. You say something bright and encouraging. You try not to make your face too emotional because nobody asked you to turn the sidewalk into a scene. The child may be excited. Nervous. Completely fine. Deeply focused on a leaf.

And then, somehow, you are supposed to leave.

I think that is the part nobody can fully prepare you for. Preschool is wonderful. Independence is good. Children need worlds that are bigger than the rooms we share with them. Still, there is a strange little ache in handing your child to a day you will not witness.

They will sing songs you do not know. Make tiny jokes. Need help and receive it from someone else. They will become a little more themselves in a place where you are not standing nearby.

That is the goal, of course.

It is also rude of growth to be so beautiful and so difficult at the same time.

I try to remember that a first day does not require everyone to be perfectly brave. A child can be proud and nervous. A parent can be grateful and sad. A goodbye can be the right thing and still feel heavy.

Then the day continues.

The backpack comes home. There is a crumpled paper in the folder. A small story at dinner.

And just like that, a new part of childhood has begun.
