Preschool Big Feelings Are Not Small Just Because the Person Is

Preschool big feelings often arrive in small packaging.

A broken cracker. The wrong cup. A sock seam. A banana that was peeled with insufficient respect. From the outside, the reason can look tiny. From the child’s face, you would think civilization has ended.

I used to catch myself trying to solve the reason too quickly.

“It is just a cracker.”

“We have another cup.”

“The banana is still a banana.”

All true. None of it especially helpful to a person whose nervous system has just filed an emergency report about fruit.

The more I watch small children, the more I think the trigger is not always the point. Sometimes the broken cracker is simply where the tiredness landed. Or the hunger. Or the overstimulation from a loud morning. Or the hard work of being three or four and constantly being told how pants, time, sharing, and gravity are supposed to function.

That does not mean every feeling gets to run the house. Boundaries matter. I am very much in favor of keeping the banana laws reasonable.

But I am trying to remember that big feelings are not fake because they look inconvenient to adults. They are real feelings in a small body with limited customer service training.

Parenting in those moments can feel oddly public even at home. You hear your own voice. You wonder if you are being too soft, too firm, too loud, too tired, too everything. Meanwhile the child has moved on to needing a hug and you are still emotionally holding the cracker.

There is no tidy lesson here.

Some days I stay calm. Some days I apologize. Some days we both need a minute.

Maybe that is the work: not making every storm disappear, but becoming a place where a child can learn that storms pass.
