Preschool Friendships Are Somehow Tiny and Enormous
Preschool friendships can change before lunch, but parents still end up carrying the emotions home like they were handed to us in a backpack.
Preschool friendships are not casual.
They may look casual from the outside, because the people involved are wearing sneakers with lights in them and occasionally eating sand-adjacent snacks. But emotionally, the whole thing can feel like a very small soap opera with better jackets.
One day your child has a best friend. The next day that best friend is “not my friend anymore” because they sat next to someone else during snack. By pickup, they may be best friends again. By dinner, your child may have forgotten the entire incident while you are still thinking about it like it was a shareholder meeting.
I have caught myself asking far too many questions.
“Did you play with her today?”
“Was he kind?”
“Who did you sit beside?”
This is how a normal adult becomes a preschool social investigator with no badge and too much concern.
I think parents worry because friendship is one of the first places we watch our children be separate from us. We cannot stand beside them the whole time. We cannot whisper the right thing to say. We cannot make another child include them, like them, notice them, or stop taking the blue truck.
And that is uncomfortable.
Children, meanwhile, are learning friendship in real time. They are practicing sharing, loyalty, jealousy, repair, and the deeply human experience of wanting the same purple marker as someone else. It is messy because learning people is messy.
I try to remind myself that a hard playground day is not a full biography. A child who feels left out today may feel completely included tomorrow. A friendship that looks dramatic may be doing exactly what early friendships do: stretching, wobbling, trying again.
Still, it is tender to watch.
Because underneath the playground updates and snack-table politics is the same small wish every parent recognizes: please let my child find people who are kind to them.
That wish is enormous, even when the children are very small.
